library volunteer job description

What are good books for me to read to get familiar with coordinating events and volunteers for a non-profit?
I am a new Programs Coordinator for United Way. I am a part of Community Impact with a focus on Education through “Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library” and Volunteer Center- Civic Engagement. What are some resource books to help me develop my skills as a Programs Coordinator? See below for more details about my job description.
I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Child and Family Studies so I am very familiar with non-profit organizations and resources for clients. However, coordinating programs and events as well as managing volunteers will be new to me! This is an entry-level position so I will have help from my supervisors. However, I would like to be independent as I can be so I can make their job easier! I would like to get my hands on some resource books that will aid me in my new position so that I can give my best to this organization!
Please only serious answers! Thank you for any help!
You can go to the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ website (www.afpnet.org) and look for webinars and books on the topics of volunteer coordination and event planning.
Also, check out the Chronicle of Philanthropy (http://philanthropy.com/) which is one of the leading publications read by non-profit professionals.
It sounds like you’ve got a great job!
Hope this helps. Good luck!

I wanted to study abroad for this coming August. Do you know of any programs?
I wanted to do a month long internship/charity/volunteer work for August 09. I know it’s last minute, but I’ve been searching for a while now. I would love to do conservation, management, communications, art, economics, environmental studies, because those are within my fields of study.
Here’s the rub: it has to provide accommendations, flight ticket, meals and/or stipend.

conservation volunteering south america

The volunteers in Zurite, the base for our Inca Projects, are to be involved in two significant and exciting projects. The restoration of the beautiful 17th century church in the village square has recently started while an excavation of the original village site will begin in mid-May.
The restoration of San Nicolas de Bari Church.
The Andean village of Zurite, like many Peruvian villages of its type, sees its Church as the cornerstone of the community. This colonial church, built following the arrival of the Spanish ´Conquistadores´, has largely fallen into disrepair. Important both as a local facility and as a potential tourist attraction, the Institucion Nacional de Cultura (INC) and Teaching and Projects Abroad are now working together to restore it. The INC is the government body that looks after ruins and historic buildings in Peru – similar to English Heritage. Its experts are assisting and guiding Projects Abroad volunteers with uncovering, cleaning and conserving altars, statues and the detailed murals and frescos that decorate the walls. The volunteers are learning skills and techniques in conservation and restoration while working towards a December deadline that will see the church once again be the glorious focal point for Zurite´s annual fiesta day.
Excavation at Tambo Cancha
Following the success of last year, Projects Abroad volunteers will once again be assisting with the excavation at Tambo Cancha: the original site of the village of Zurite. Working with local archaeologists from mid-May, the volunteers will hope to uncover further artefacts, trinkets and secrets from this unusual site. Unlike most Incan towns that are laid out in a grid style, Tambo Cancha is in the shape of a ´Tumi´ or ceremonial knife, with houses on only 3 sides. Several rooms uncovered last year were in the form of the Andean Cross or ´Chacana´, the most sacred and powerful Incan symbol. For two months the volunteers will be involved with the dig, learning skills including how to conserve, catalogue and label the finds. More importantly, Projects Abroad will be helping to discover just why the village of Zurite was so important to the Incan empire.

Non-Profit animal volunteer projects abroad?
I am planning a round the world 12 months (min) trip for the end of 2009 – by myself.
I am planning on going to Africa, Australia, NZ, China, Japan, Thailand & America (at least) and want to part take in plenty of wildlife/animal conservation projects – BUT i do not want to give £££££’s to Profit Companies – who will organise my stay for me – i have pleantly of time to do that myself.
So my question is does anyone know and small – but in need projects around the countries that i have suggested, that i could contact directly and cut out the middle man and make more direct donations.
Any other backpacking/round the world planning advice would be greatly appricated.
I wish I could helpo you, Its something I would like to do myself, though my main ambition is the Galapogos….. I’ve had a thing about saving the sea turtles that nest there, since I saw them in a wildlife book when I was 5… I’m now 32…. And still have the book..
Thats beside the point….
There used to be a lot of adverts for voluntary workers in the back of the Economist…. Not had one in a while so can’t verify that.
The only other thing I could suggest would be to contact the World Wildlife Fund/Green Peace/ Friends of the Eath directly and say you will organise your own transport… Etc…
Unfortunately I know they have to organise accomodation, food etc. for insurance purposes (which they will also organise).
Good luck and what a fantastic experience for you to have…
I’d love to see pics of the trip when you get back
