What is “Library Science” called in college?
I am interested in being a librarian, but in looking through the information from universities, there is no “librarian” degree program. Is it a “media specialist”?
It’s called library science (MLS) and it’s a masters program. You can get a bachelors degree in anything – history, English, art, even science – and then go to library school.

BS in Library Science?
I am interested in getting my Masters in Library Science. I am still working on my BA/BS. I have completed all of my GE, so now it just comes down to completing a major. I started taking classes at CSUN (Northridge in CA) for Geography, as I figured that would provide a solid foundation. I have since learned that the University of Maine offers an online course whereby upon completion, I would receive a BS in Information and Library Science. Now, the ALA apparently does not accredit BS programs for Library Science, only Masters level programs. If my only intention is to try and become a librarian, is it redundant to have both a BS and a Masters in Library Science? Let’s say I don’t go on for a Master’s can a BS get me anywhere in the field? It seems like EVERYONE requires a Masters. Anyone know about Maine’s program? The online aspect really appeals to me (I work and have a kid). Is it worth getting the BS in the same field I intend to get a Masters in?
To work in any decent position in a library you will need at minimum a MA. And often you can’t even get a position at the desk without one.
I don’t think that it is redundant to have both a BA/BS in library sciences and the Masters in it as well…but I think that there is some merit in having knowledge of another area to broaden your scope in the library.
I would find a few Masters programs you are interested in applying to and see what kinds of undergraduate degrees they require to get in. Then you can make a decision as to what undergrad degree you want.
Also, having worked in a Visual Arts Library in college, try a minor in multimedia programs – photoshop, html, etc…those things will really help boost your applications when applying to grad school and later for jobs. Libraries are having to become “modern” in their research and are looking for people with those skills in computer programs/programming.
As far as the online program..once you find a few masters programs you are interested in…I would double check to see if the schools would accept that degree…call their admissions department or email the head professor in that program and ask if they would accept you with that degree. That way you know for sure if it would be worth getting.
