German Social Democracy, 1905-1917: The Development of the Great Schism (Widener Library Shelflist; 60) $28.05 No political parties of present-day Germany are separated by a wider gulf than the two parties of labor, one democratic and reformist, the other totalitarian and socialist-revolutionary. Social Democrats and Communists today face each other as bitter political enemies across the front lines of the cold war; yet they share a common origin in the Social Democratic Party of Imperial Germany. How di… |

Widener: Biography of a Library (Harvard College Library) $49.97 Wallace Stegner called its stacks “enchanted.” Barbara Tuchman called it “my Archimedes bathtub, my burning bush.” But to Thomas Wolfe, it was a place of “wilderment and despair.” Since its opening in 1915, the Harry Elkins Widener Memorial Library has led a spirited life as Harvard’s physical and, in a sense, its spiritual heart. Originally intended as the memorial to one man, it quickly grew i… |

What is the 13 arrondissement like in Paris? Tips for things to do and see in the area and nearby?
In August this year I’ll be living in the 13th arrondissement (near Place d’Italie, in the flat of a friend) and taking a month-long course in teaching English as a foreign language.
Having been a frequent visitor to France over the years, yet not being very familiar with Paris, I’d love some tips on things to do and see. I’ll be studying 9am-5pm every weekday, so any tips that are for places in or close to the 13th a would be particularly appreciated. Any good cafes/bars/shopping areas/galleries/museums in this area, or close by?
Also, I’m a big reader but won’t be able to take many books with me – are there any libraries or second hand book stores with a good selection of novels in English?
Any and all advance appreciated!
There’s a fab restaurant, Au Petit Marguery, on blvd Port Royal near Gobelins metro.

Greenwich Observatory Photo Mugs A study of the Meridian Building of the Royal Observatory from the lower ground of the Park to the north-east, with Park visitors in the foreground. This was apparently drawn in the early stages of the replacement of the onion dome on the Great Equatorial Tower, which is shown topped with a roofed scaffold structure, walled in plastic sheet or net. The original Victorian dome (1894) was badly dama… |

Identity and the Museum Visitor Experience $25.31 Understanding the visitor experience provides essential insights into how museums can affect peopleâs lives. Personal drives, group identity, decision-making and meaning-making strategies, memory, and leisure preferences, all enter into the visitor experience, which extends far beyond the walls of the institution both in time and space. Drawing upon a career in studying museum visitors, renow… |

Learning from Museums: Visitor Experiences and the Making of Meaning (American Association for State and Local History) $24.95 Why do people go to museums and what do they learn there? What roles can museums serve in a learning community? How can museums facilitate more effective learning experiences? John H. Falk and Lynn D. Dierking investigate these questions in Learning from Museums. Synthesizing theories and research from a wide range of disciplines, including psychology, education, anthropology, neuroscience and mus… |
