conservation internships abroad
I wanted to study abroad for this coming August. Do you know of any programs?

I wanted to do a month long internship/charity/volunteer work for August 09. I know it’s last minute, but I’ve been searching for a while now. I would love to do conservation, management, communications, art, economics, environmental studies, because those are within my fields of study.
Here’s the rub: it has to provide accommendations, flight ticket, meals and/or stipend.

rotary.org. rotary is the cheapest of them. it will provide everything. just go to their website and if u have any questions. just respond. age: 15 1/2-18 1/2 years old. btw, i have a question, what are you nta (non teenager activities)? cuz im applying for college soon and i need some lol…

energy conservation rebates

energy conservation rebates
Why do energy companies promote energy conservation and efficiency?

My gas company gave me a free energy audit of my home, and offers generous rebates to install insulation and other energy saving products. I don’t understand why they do this. If I use less gas, they make less money. Why are they doing these things?
By the way, I won’t believe any answers that say “it’s the right thing to do”, or “they want to be green”. I don’t buy that. Profit drives almost all business decisions, and this doesn’t seem profitable to me.

They have a set price they can sell their product for. They have to go through a long process to raise their prices. By keeping the volume of gas for sale down, they don’t need to expand infrastructure which costs lots of money and would necessitate a price hike.

What are the causes of polar bears getting closer to extinction? Why is it important to understant the issue?

I am doing a ecology project in my biology class. We chose a conservation issue to focus on and we are to create a flyer on our issue and present it in front of the class. I am going to choose the topic about polar bears nearing extinction. Any input will help.
Thanks!

I did a similar project in biology a couple years ago.
There is a ton of information out there…
What I found is that melting glaciers are creating greater distance between ice floes. Hence, polar bears have to swim greater distances from piece to piece. They get tired and drown. In 2005, I think, there were more than 70 found dead from drowning.
Additionally, with warming temperatures, polar bears are moving into habitats they didn’t previously occupy, and leaving ones they did. People and polars don’t mix too well.
Another issue is the entire food chain itself. All aspects of the environment are changing… too little food for this leads to too little food for that leads to hungry polar bears.
Like I said, there’s a bunch of stuff out there – google!
Good luck!

Ecocide: A Short History of Mass Extinction of Species

At the dawn of the twenty-first century, it is clear that – for the first time since the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago – changes of enormous ecological significance are occurring on our planet. The ozone layer is beginning to disintegrate. Since 1970 the world’s forests have almost halved. A quarter of the world’s fish have been depleted. We live in an age of ecocide. Seven out …

Global warming, air and water pollution, ozone-layer depletion, species extinction – these are all the results of what philosopher Frederic L. Bender calls our “culture of extinction.” In this probing analysis of the basic cultural assumptions and historical factors that have led to the current dire ecological situation, Bender argues that our only chance of avoiding imminent disaster is to recogn…
