conservation mass energy
determine final speed of first mass after falling using conservation of energy?

A 5.9 kg mass is attached to a light cord that passes over a massless, frictionless pulley. The other end of the cord is attached to a 3 kg mass.

The acceleration of gravity is 9.8 m/s^2.

Use conservation of energy to determine the final speed of the first mass after it has fallen (starting from rest) 5.3 m: Answer in units of m/s.

Use the subscripts l and s for large and small. Let mass Ms start at its 0 Potential energy position. Let mass Ml start with potential energy from its position 5.3 m over final position. And let subscripts 1 and 2 indicate before and after.

Total Energy at start = Total Energy after larger mass falls 5.3 m.
KEs1 + PEs1 + KEl1 + PEl1 = KEs2 + PEs2 + KEl2 + PEl2
0 + Ms*g*0 + 0 + 5.9 kg*g*5.3 m = (1/2)*Ms*v^2 + 3 kg*g*5.3 m + (1/2)*Ml*v^2 + 5.9 kg*g*0

Simplifying
5.9 kg*g*5.3 m = (1/2)*Ms*v^2 + 3 kg*g*5.3 m + (1/2)*Ml*v^2
5.9 kg*g*5.3 m – 3 kg*g*5.3 m = (1/2)*v^2(Ms + Ml)
2.9 kg*g*5.3 m = (1/2)*v^2*8.9 kg
Solve for v^2 and take the sqrt.

conservation energy momentum
How do I design a simple device that demonstrates the energy, momentum, and angular momentum principles?

My physics teacher has asked me to design a physical device within a week that will demonstrate to him my general understanding of the conservation of energy principle, the momentum principle, and the angular momentum principle. Any ideas on how to construct this device or a Goldberg device that will be easy to put together?

Flywheel driven electric car. (A model car using a flywheel + motor/generator instead of a battery)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flywheel_energy_storage

You “charge up” the car by using an external source of electricity to drive the motor to speed up the flywheel. Then when running, the flywheel turns the motor which generates electricity to drive the motors connected to the heels.

Or, simpler, but messier, a boat driven by a propellor. The movement of the water backward drives the boat forward – linear momentum; the turning of the propellor also causes tilt of the boat (which is why many ships have two counter-rotating propellors); and there is the efficiency of different sizes of propellors – energy vs. momentum. (You can do the same with a helicopter, but helicopters are much harder to build.)

Harder to build but easier to design would be water wheels.

And the list goes on.

energy conservation topics

energy conservation topics
a topic that focuses on a geographical issue/problem?

Well, I’m doing my SGP (Senior Geography Project) at the moment, and i’m stuck on finding a topic to research. I have to choose a topic on any geographical issue and use surverying, interviews, questionaires, observation/measurement or ANY technique to research the topic. Some topics people have done in the past are things like:

1.Urban decay and renewal
2.Sources of pollution in a local community
3.Waste disposal
4.Energy conservation in a local community

So, i need something that’s easy to do. Preferably something relating to current issues, like maybe water shortages, or recycling, or anything!

Do your project on Red Dog Mine in Northwest Alaska and the fact that it is one of the most cited for pollution. It is a lead-zinch mine. Lots of material online. Many eskimos still hunt and fish heavily in this area.
