conservation energy equation
physics- springs energy conservation?

1a) An 8.7 kg block slides with an initial speed of 1.66m/s up a ramp inclinded at an angle of 27.4 degrees with the horizontal. The coefficient of knetic friction between the block and the ramp is .62. Use the energy of conservation to find the distance the block slides before coming to rest.
I know vi =1.66m/s
vf=o and the mass and how the pic looks.

Would I have to make three seperate equations?
One with it at rest, another with it move, and then when it has stopped?

1b) A .43 kg block is attached to a horizontal spring that is at its equilibrium length, and whose force constant is 20N/m. The block rests on a frictionless surface. A .05 kg wad of putty is thrown horizontally at the block, hitting it with a speed of 2.3m/s and sticking. How far does the putty block system compress the spring?

I would have to make 2 equations right? Kinematics is involved?

Would I have to make three seperate equations?
One with it at rest, another with it move, and then when it has stopped?

You need to draw the free body diagram if the block.

The weight is resolved into a component down the ramp and force normal to the ramp which is responsible for friction. The friction force is also directed down the ramp. The down ramp forces produce an acceleration of the block down the ramp until it comes to rest.

v = a t

s = 1/2 a t^2

so

s = 1/2 v^2 / a

and sum of down ramp forces = m a

2. First compute the initial velocity of the block and putty by conservation of momentum.

Compute the KE and equate to 1/2 k x^2 for the spring to find x

A beautiful piece of mathematics, Noether’s Theorem touches on every aspect of physics. Emmy Noether proved her theorem in 1915 and published it in 1918. This profound concept demonstrates the connection between conservation laws and symmetries. For instance, the theorem shows that a system invariant under translations of time, space, or rotation will obey the laws of conservation of energy, linea…

Creative ideas for geography assignment?

Well, I have a major geography due in two weeks, and our teacher cares alot about appearance/creativity. The assignment is to find newspaper articles over the semester that relate to each of the following categories:

1. Canada’s Natural Diversity
-Parks, conservation, unique landforms

2. Canada’s People
- Cultural diversity, rural/urban issues, immigration/emigration, First Peoples

3.Canada’s Natural Resources
- Water, fish, forestry, etc.

4. Global Connections
- Interaction with other nations

5. Geo-technology
- Aerial photography, GPS, GIS, satellite imagery

Now, I’m supposed to summarize each article and write an analysis/reflection on it. But our teacher wants us to organize it or put it in some special, creative, funky style. I have no idea what I should do =S Any suggestions? Our course is on CANADA.

Narrowing it down to one industry might get you started. The lumber industry could easily tie into all those.

conservation kinetic energy

conservation kinetic energy
If Law of Conservation of energy is true always, than PE=KE…but why does…?

OK, so for my physics class we did a lab to determine the potential and kinetic energies of a toy car going down a ramp at the height of 16cm, a distance of 106cm, and an average speed of 1.20 (sec).
As a result I got 0.0538J of PE and 0.0152J of KE. Why is it that if law of conservation of energy is true always, then PE=KE, but why did the experimentally obtained PE did not = KE?

well, the first thing to note is errors. there are errors which include bad reaction time (for stopwatch) or bad measurements (innacurate ruler) or anything else.
the other thing to note is that a lot of heat and sound energy got used up going down the ramp. the friction creates heat, and im sure you heard the rumbling as the toy car went down the ramp.

this is called percent error. the way you calculate it is
(experimental-actual)/actual

then times 100

where the experimental is what you got as a result (the 0.0152 KE) and the the actual is the 0.0538 PE

so you do:
((0.0152-0.0538)/0.0538)*100
=71% error.

this is worth mentioning in your lab for extra points.
as you can see, it is also a rather high percent error, so it may be beneficial to re-do the experiment.

hope this helps ;)

Marine Conservationists?

What are your opinions of Marine Conservationists?

Marine conservation, also known as marine resources conservation, is the protection and preservation of ecosystems in oceans and seas. Marine conservation focuses on limiting human-caused damage to marine ecosystems, and on restoring damaged marine ecosystems. Marine conservation also focuses on preserving vulnerable marine species. (Wikipedia, Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. 2008)

It’s imperative that we work hard to keep our oceans and the eco system healthy. Many scientists agree that the ocean is what gives our earth its life line. Each piece of that ocean has its own place and line in the cycle. If something is broken then everything else is off wack. By helping both the fish and creatures that inhabit the ocean and allowing them to recover we ensure that ocean is taken care of by those very creatures and gives earth a healthier future. It’s like going to the dentist and not brushing. You brush your teeth to protect yourself and we need to do the same with this.
