It seems I don’t have any friends…?

After a pretty harsh fight w/ some “ex-friends” it seems my social life has dropped to zero. I’m a college student in San Diego, live alone, and my life has been classes, looking for a job, and then straight home. People that I associate with have that distinct group of friends that I tag along with on rare occasion, but thats about it. I have alot of hobbies, and tend to keep myself busy that way, but it just doesnt fill the emptyness left by lacking human interaction. I tend to act alot older than my age, and dont like to drink or party or anything like that and that seems to hold me back. I’m really shy when I meet people, but I do open up a bit more when I get to know someone. Its getting really tough to just sit at home at night knowing that people are out there having fun with friends.

I dont know what to do. Any advice? I dont have alot of money to go spend on alot of stuff either.

College is supposed to be the best years of your life. Now do you live on campus or transport back and forth. The difference is great. Universities are diverse. Join a common-interest group. Say you like chess, join a chess club if they have one. Everyone has hobbies. If there’s a club/group that involves your hobbies, just drop by once and see how you like it. Those places are always great to meet people because you share a common interest and the majority of the time… they are cheap or even free. Colleges; yes, do primarily drink and party but not everyone does. I don’t go every Friday and Saturday to drink (mind you I work too).

Before, I was like you. I was only going to school and nothing else. Got pretty depressing. I then found out that my college had a group of people who were like me so I became friends with some of them (some who are my best friends now). So now, I find it hard to juggle friends, college, and work. I prefer that lifestyle though. Why don’t you give this a shot. If it doesn’t work, you can contact me for further details.

Good luck.

Preservatives for Fruit Sauce?

I am making a passionfruit sauce that i am storing in glass bottles.

The last batches I made, one went off quickly and the other fermented. Not what I want so what can I do?

How can I preserve my sauce?

The ingredients I use are passionfruit, sugar, leon juice, lemon zest and water.

I am a real beginner at food preservation and making sauces so please help and sorry for my ignorance! :P

Thanks heaps!

This is the best way without adding any chemicals to your sauce.

Place food in jars. There are two methods for doing this. In the hot pack method you heat the food first in a separate pot. In the raw pack method the raw fruit is added directly to the jars. It is okay to prepare many foods using the raw pack method, but for some foods, the heat process will not be sufficient.

Now pour boiling water, broth, juice or syrup over the food in the jar. When packing the food and adding water, be sure to allow for expansion by leaving some space in the neck of the jar. The amount of space to leave varies from a fraction of an inch for jams to slightly over an inch for low acid fruits and vegetables.

Use a paper towel to wipe off the sealing edge of the jar. Now place lids on top of jars; remember to leave enough give to let air escape during the sterilization process. There are various types of lids, some are self-sealing which means that they can be tightened firmly before sterilization.

environmental preservation quotes
Can one person make a difference regarding the environment?

I was reading an article in Sunday’s Houston Chronicle on a professor from the University of Texas named Eric Pianka, who in regards to caring for the environment, and lessening one’s imprint on the earth, stated that it more or less doesn’t really matter. Quoting the article, “In truth, it backfires”, and “when you walk or ride a bike or drive a Prius, all you do is encourage some expletive out there to drive a Hummer or an Excursion.”

Is the professor right, that it doesn’t really matter what you do? That environmental preservation efforts aren’t really worth it?

Thoughtful answers please, not reactionary stuff. I’m not saying I agree or disagree with him: I’m just curious if anyone read this and what they think. Here’s the article: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4143416.html

everyone can make a difference to his or her own environment and to their local environment

decide what kind of environment you want, and then work to get there

I agree with your professor that if lots of people choose to use less of a certain thing, say gasoline, that will move to reduce the price of gasoline and therefore someone else may use more than they would have if the price were higher

but it doesn’t actually balance, most people don’t want to drive a hummer and won’t no matter how cheap gas is

It is equally true that the decisions that everybody makes matters and you are part of everybody. If everybody chose as you choose, then you would get the results you choose, so by making that choice yourself and encouraging it in others, you do in fact make a difference

It is a corallary to the “prisoner’s dilemna” to say that since others might make a choice I disagree with, I will do so also.
