animal conservation volunteer work
Animal Rights Dilemma?
I am an avid Animal Rights activist.
But, i’ve recently heavily comitted myself to volunteering at the Vancouver Aquarium. I know that Aquariums are sanctuaries for Animal Rights activists, but the reason why I got involved because the whole existence behind the Vancouver Aquarium is conservation. It opens up opportunities to actually help feed, strengthen and heal sea otters, porpoise whales, dolphins, etc who have been negatively affected by the environment in the surrounding BC area (oil spills, pod abandonment, etc.).
Is this hypocritical of me? I am in a sort of dilemma. I can’t really come to some sort of conclusion besides the fact that I think I am “actually going out there and doing something besides standing on a sidewalk waving a sign”.
Is this reasonable? I myself don’t know.
Of course it is not hypocritical. You are ‘restoring’ the quality of life to an animal, that was effected by man’s neglect. How can that be hypocritical. NOW, if you are ‘training’ these animals to serve entertainment value in some show, and they can’t be returned to their native habitat, to live free…. well… then I might understand your concerns, but again, this animal was suffering, would die, would not be able to exist, had it not been for your intervention. That is humane. That is fair. That is what it is all about.
