$3.95

Where Britney Spears’s first two albums hewed to the early-’60s formula of one strong single plus a stack of filler–a fair bit of which ended up on the radio anyway–her third justifies itself as a full-length listen. Led by the single “I’m a Slave 4 U,” a Neptunes-helmed piece of electrofunk that promises she’ll do anything you want as long as it’s dancing, the album continues through superior v…

Human Clay

Human Clay

$3.89

Creed burst out of Florida with 1997′s My Own Prison, a dark but commercial debut reminiscent of the early-’90s Seattle sound. Creed’s moody guitar grunge and ardent lyrics, coupled with singer Scott Stapp’s passionate vocals, helped My Own Prison sell millions. Human Clay demonstrates that this likable quartet hasn’t messed with success; they turn in a sophomore outing rife with evocative moodine…

My Own Prison

$3.99

It took a few years, but the “Seattle sound” migrated south. In 1997 Creed emerged from the sunny state of Florida wielding dark and dulcet postgrunge tones. Their 10-cut debut, My Own Prison, has became a surprising success by filling a niche for needy teen gloom-rockers. Singer Scott Stapp has the soulful and rich Eddie Vedder inflections down pat, but despite Creed’s slightly hackneyed approach…

Dr. Seuss' The Cat In The Hat (Widescreen Edition)

Dr. Seuss’ The Cat In The Hat (Widescreen Edition)

$3.93

The Cat in the Hat is a marketing ploy disguised as a wildly designed movie for hyperactive kids, and it could use a dose of Ritalin. It hardly matters, though, because kids will surely enjoy the rampant romp that occurs when the top-hatted feline convinces young Sally (Dakota Fanning) and Conrad (Spencer Breslin) to wreak havoc in the home their mother (Kelly Preston) has neatly prepared for an u…

Ocean’s Twelve

Like its predecessor Ocean’s Eleven, Ocean’s Twelve is a piffle of a caper, a preposterous plot given juice and vitality by a combination of movie star glamour and the exuberant filmmaking skill of director Steven Soderbergh (Out of Sight, The Limey). The heist hijinks of the first film come to roost for a team of eleven thieves (including the glossy mugs of Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Bernie Mac, and …

library book sales

By far, the biggest concern of any writer (published or unpublished) is being able to increase book sales.  Yes we all love writing and yearn for the thrill and fulfillment that comes with actually having our books on the shelves of Barnes and Noble and the likes, but let’s be honest, we want our books to sell, sell and sell some more; as do our agents, our editors and our publishers.  After all, why did they take us on as clients if it weren’t in hopes of being able to sell our titles?  Are they not in the publishing industry as business professionals?  Yes they are.  This is a concept all authors need to grasp and accept.

Writing, publishing and selling books is a business, a serious business.  If you want to be successful, you need to understand that it is your business and no one will care about your book sales as much as you do.  So let’s focus on the ever challenging task of increasing book sales. Here are three questions you need to ask yourself before creating an effective book marketing plan:

  • Do I have a targeted audience?
  • Who is my targeted audience?
  • How will I reach my targeted audience?

Once you have answered these questions, you should create two lists.  One list for online and another for offline book marketing techniques.  An important part of book marketing is to know which techniques work for you and to multiply those efforts.  Here are two suggestions for each list to get you started.

Online Book Marketing

  • Create a Fan Page on Facebook (this is a great online viral marketing tool).  It’s popular because it works.
  • Create a Flickr.com profile and add pictures that would attract your targeted audience.  Be sure to include your author website URL in your profile so viewers can find you.

Offline Book Marketing

  • P.O.S – Point of Sales is both a checkout counter in a store and the location where a transaction occurs.  Consider selling your book in a local Mom & Pop store and have them place it near the register.
  • Library Press Release – Are you a member of your local library?  Once your book has been published, meet with the branch manager and ask her to issue a press release in the library system’s newsletter.

Remember when working to increase your book sales, it is important to implement a variety of strategies.  Common and uncommon book marketing strategies can increase you readership drastically.  Be sure to track the results of each campaign so you know in which areas to increase your efforts.  When you find a technique that doesn’t work, don’t be afraid to cease your efforts for that particular method.  Don’t be discouraged if you find what works for other writers does not work for you.  Simply move on to the next book marketing strategy.

A final point to keep in mind is to be organized in all your book marketing efforts.  Disorganization will only hinder your progress and success.

library supplies book covers

In some courses, especially in your senior year, you may be asked to submit long pieces of writing that may be loosely classified as term papers or research reports. Typical among these are studies of an author’s characteristics or surveys of literary movements in honor English classes or analyses in depth of various topics in your science or social studies courses.

Now, a bit of advice. It is your obligation as an intelligent student to become familiar with the frequently used sources of information in a well-equipped library. Unless you have a first hand acquaintance with these valuable aids to research, you cannot hope to do a quick and efficient job of gathering material for your report.

Assuming you are reasonably familiar with library reference sources, you would not abandon your topic until you had checked with each of the following:

A. Your Textbook

If your topic is an extension of a subject studied in class and covered in your textbook, look at the end of the chapter that dealt with the subject. The author has probably listed the names of the books he used to get his information. Or he may have supplied the titles at the end of the book in a bibliography. Get some cards or slips of paper and jot down this information for each book:

Author (last name first)

Title of the book (underlined)

Publisher

Date published or latest copyright

Number of volume (if more than one)

Pages (if supplied)

B. Reference Works

These are the books, in single or multiple volumes, that supply condensed accounts of any subject you can think of. The various biographical dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases, gazetteers, yearbooks, annuals, literary histories and handbooks, indexes, and language guides summarize for you pertinent information about famous people, places, events, historical movements, scientific achievements, and literature. Perhaps more important than the facts you can get from these general reference works is the titles of additional books that are often listed at the end of articles. These, too, jot down on cards or slips in the same way you did the textbook references.

C. The Card Catalogue

You have probably learned in the library work that is part of every course in English how to handle the title, author, and subject cards that are found in this primary source. Start with the references suggested by your textbook and by the general works.

Look up the call numbers of the books on your cards. You will find these numbers on the upper left hand side of the catalogue card. Jot them down. While you are at the cabinet, check the key words of the title of your topic against additional catalogue cards. For instance, if you have selected “Fur Trading in the West,” try “Fur,” “Trading,” and “West.” Use more cards for listing these.

D. Readers’ Guide to Periodical Literature

If your topic is the kind about which articles appear in newspapers, magazines, or journals, you must also consult the Readers’ Guide, which is a monthly publication later bound into volumes covering one or more years.

Here again you can find information, by title, author, or subject, about articles that have been published in hundreds of periodicals. The advantage of using such a source is clear when you realize that you may have selected a topic that is so new that it has not yet found its way into books. Again, you put any suggested lead on a card or slip by:

Call number (if periodical is bound)

Name of author (last name first)

Title of article (in quotation marks)

Name of periodical (underlined)

Volume number

Pages covered by article

Date of issue (month, day, year)

E. The Librarian

A slogan found posted in many stores could well apply to libraries: “If you don’t see what you want, ask for it.” Librarians welcome the opportunity to help visitors find information. Don’t hesitate to talk over your problem with a librarian if you are having difficulty locating useful references. She is a professional at this game and can offer you invaluable assistance.

Research your topic well and you will no doubt write a first-class paper.
