Helpful tips and hints about college and the future?

Me and my brother start college in september me doing Business (future goals: go to uni get a degree in water-sports and to open water-sports excursions business around the globe.) and him do in animal care ( future goals: do a degree in conservation and have own t.v program, and invest in game reserves.) well he has started reading books and thing to prepare for college and uni, but im stuck on what i can read about, Business studies, Water-sports, or Businesses Abroad. Please could someone lead me the right way and also any useful tips about the future plans would be great. Thanks

With regards to your college course, the best thing to do is just email the department or go into the college and ask if they have some kind of a reading list. I’m not sure what course you are doing (A level, Btec, Diploma, something else?), but whichever it is, at this stage in your education there will be a pretty set curriculum and there will definitely be one or more text books which will be recommended for you to read. If you can’t get in touch with the department, just go to a bookshop or library and get an A level business text book. It might not completely follow the course you are doing, but it will provide you with the basics of how the economy works, how businesses work etc. That’s all you really need at this stage.

As for your uni course, it’s a great idea to do some reading now as that will help you to show your interest when you come to apply. I really have no idea about water sports as a degree or the kind of books you’d need to read. However, it may be a good idea for you to sign up now for some open days at universities you are interested in. I just looked up your degree on UCAS, clicked on one of the universities which offer it (Portsmouth) and found that they have open days all through the summer for students considering studying there –

Most of the other uni’s will have similar things. Basically just go along to a couple of these. You will get the opportunity to chat with lecturers about your course – which will help you decide where you want to apply – and they will be also able to give you some pointers as to which books would be useful to read. This is something that always gets asked at these open days, in my experience. They may also have handouts or leaflets about the course which would also include a list of a few useful books. Open days were the best source of info for me when I was applying to uni, and I found it really helpful to get some recommendations regarding books to read. Good luck!
