In the capital city of Thailand lies The Museum of Counterfeit Goods. Started in 1989, the museum’s collected works has developed from 100 objects in four groups to over 1500 articles in 20 different types. The Museum of Counterfeit Goods houses a variety of footwear, watches, cars and machine parts, furniture, alcohol and stationery. The rise in forged items that are present in Bangkok and all around Southeast Asia has resulted in the museum having more items to display, so much so that they rotate objects on display every four months.
Items usually appear alongside the genuine article, so visitors can play spot the difference. This educates them about the social and economic consequences of counterfeiting. As the goods were rising in number, authorities wanted to benefit from them and made them of some use to the society by displaying them for all to peruse. The museum was formally known as the Tilleke & Gibbins Museum of Counterfeit Goods. The museum had been initiated at the Tilleke & Gibbins Bangkok office and features several articles from raids on behalf of the company’s customers. The Tilleke & Gibbins Bangkok office was part of a local law firm. These items serve no function subsequent to their application in the courts of law.
A range of international news agencies such as CNN, BBC, Australian and Danish National Television have featured the museum in previous telecasts to create awareness to the public to the predicament of counterfeit objects. Furthermore, a number of local and worldwide newspapers and magazines have circulated commentaries that talk about the counterfeit goods in the museum. The museum has been featured on the front page of the Journal of Commerce, an American newspaper.
Notable legal representatives of Tikkeke & Gibbins, Titirat Wattanachewanopakorn and Nuttaphol Arammuang have been featured in documentaries giving insight to the museum and the connected matters of counterfeiting to those in the immigration section at the Royal Thai Customs Department in Bangkok.
To visit the Museum of Counterfeit Goods search for a Bangkok Serviced Apartments such as the Bangkok Grand President which will be an ideal place for tourists to stay and get around to explore this attraction of Thailand and other wonders of the city.
