library cataloging courses

Catologing question for Graduate Library students?
I’m currently working on my master library science and am enrolled in a cataloging course. The class is only two weeks old and is already kicking my sorry ***. My question is: how important is this information? How often will I refer to the knowledge I have learned in this class? Is this class just a relic from the days before vendors provided MARC records? I fully intend on finishing the class, I just want to know how much blood sweat and tears I should invest.
I take it you are not going to join my friends in cataloging services. You will refer to what you learn, and it helps to have an understanding of subject headings, cutter tables etc.
Cataloging is more an art than an exact science, which is where the frustration comes in . Pay attention, do the best you can. Some of the information will prove very useful.
