eBook Readers and eBooks from the NY Public Library?
Can either the Amazon Kindle or B&N Nook read eBooks from the New York Public Library?
The Nook might be able to; it works with Adobe Digital Editions. (Of a new & different type of DRM, and I’m not sure it’s library-compatible.)
The Kindle cannot; the only DRM it allows is books from the Kindle store.
The Sony Readers work with NYPL ebooks, and so do Astak’s Pocket Pro & others.

I’m in my Senior Seminar for my Bachelors Degree and our assigned topic for our 20-30 page research paper is anything to do with American Families. I’ve decided to do German Familial Immigration Patterns to the Hill Country, Texas and I’m thinking I want my thesis to be based on how family life did or didn’t change based on this big change in their lives. Do you think this is a good topic? I choose it because my maternal grandmother’s is a full-blooded German, direct descendant of these immigrants, and I live in San Antonio, so I hope there will be a lot of primary resources. Can anyone give me any guidelines on how to go about this research? I’ve already picked out a few places that have primary resources (UT in Austin, Institute of Texan Cultures and UTSA John Peace Library). Your suggestions???
That sounds fascinating, and is an unusual topic. I recently discovered at a lecture that my German great-grandmother’s family may have come to this country with the Hessians to fight in the Rev War. They settled in PA, which is understandable. I can’t imagine how Germans came to settle in Texas; I would be interested in that one myself. That is an incredibly immense cultural change.
I would try the Texas Historical Society; find out if there are any German Socities in your area. I Googled “German Historical Society” and “German Migration – Texas” and came up with a number of sites. You would have a better idea which one may be of interest to you. Consider seeking out a German professor. They may be able to help you network. Is there German Ambassador? They may be able to connect you with an organization in Germany.
I am aware that many Germans came here during the Rev War, and settled primarily in VA and PA. Possibly their migration to Texas be a part of that migration pattern. If so, you may consider contacting the PA Historical Society. If your research is 18th century oriented, I would contact the Brigade of the American Revolution, or the Sons or Daughters of the American Revolution.
